Chatham House fellow provides evidence to UK Parliament Joint Select Committee on the National Security Strategy

Senior Research Fellow Dr Marion Messmer provided evidence to a session of the UK Parliament’s Joint Select Committee on the National Security Strategy (NSS) on 22 October. The committee provides scrutiny, feedback and implementation recommendations on the NSS.

Dr Messmer was asked to provide evidence due to her expertise on nuclear weapons issues. During her appearance she discussed the independence of the UK’s nuclear deterrence capabilities, existing investment plans, and the wider security environment.

The committee asked specific questions covering recent developments including the UK’s purchase of nuclear-capable F35 aircraft, the issues concerning nuclear submarines spending more time at sea, and nuclear threats emerging from Russia.

Dr Messmer’s evidence will inform the committee’s report, including recommendations on actions needed by UK government, and how to prioritize implementation.

Dr Messmer said:

‘I was pleased to give evidence today to the committee, which has an important role ensuring the continuing effectiveness of the UK’s conventional and nuclear deterrence.

‘Chatham House’s research on these challenges can seek to inform the UK government’s strategy, helping to shape effective policy to ensure the country’s safety’.
